01 — The Practice

AYDirector works at the point where African musical tradition meets the modern stage — writing, conducting, producing and curating in the same breath.

Ayo Ajayi composes across sacred and secular repertoire, theatrical scores and chamber works, moving as easily between a cathedral choir loft and a musical-theatre pit as between a lecture hall and a festival stage. As a music director he shapes the sound of a production from the first read-through to opening night; as a theatre producer and director he shapes the production itself.

As a cultural event curator, he builds the platforms — concerts, festivals, staged works — where that music reaches an audience. And as a creative researcher working on the reconstruction and recontextualization of African theatrical and ritual music, with a specialisation in Yoruba forms, he treats every stage as an extension of the research: a place where inherited sound is studied, reconstructed, and carried forward.

06 — Research

Reconstructing & recontextualizing
Yoruba theatrical & ritual music

AYDirector's research sits in the field of creative research — practice-as-research, where composing and staging are themselves the method of inquiry. His focus is the reconstruction and recontextualization of Yoruba theatrical and ritual music: taking forms carried by ritual and traditional theatre and rebuilding them for the concert hall, the opera house and the modern stage.

At its core, the work asks a compositional question — how a musical language rooted in ritual and performance tradition can be preserved not by freezing it, but by composing it forward. Each new score becomes a compositional approach to cultural preservation: sacred and secular repertoire, theatrical scores and chamber works that carry inherited Yoruba musical material into rooms it has not yet reached.
